Chapter Eleven

Settling in

I wake up even before dawn, jump out of bed and get dressed thinking that I really need to go down the stream at the bottom of the village to wash my clothes. They are quite dirty after our days of riding. I could go for a swim as well, I feel dirty too, washing with buckets of water is not what I am used to.

When I walk into the kitchen in the Royal house the elderly woman is there, starting up a fire

“Good morning,” I say and smile at her, and she smiles back.

“Morning to you young lady.”

Then she frowns at my clothes. “I can clean your, eh, garments if you give them to me and if you wish I could find a few dresses, some of the young women in the village would be glad to lend you something suitable,” she says, clearly disapproving of my breeches and shirt.

I have never worn a dress in my life, but I do not think this is something to share so I just smile sweetly and reply, “Thank you, but there is no need for you to trouble yourself. I will go down to the stream and wash them later today.”

“But I would be happy to, and finding dresses would be no trouble at all, I assure you,” she insists and she does it kindly but I am not backing down.

“I thank you again dear woman, but my friend Susannah will undoubtedly help me with any necessary augmentations to my wardrobe.”

“Ah, Sannah, yes of course. As it should be and all will be properly done then.” She looks relieved, Susannah has apparently made a conquest, hardly a surprise of course.

“May I know your name please?” I am impatient to leave, Drake will be waiting for me soon, but I should make an effort with this woman. She has kind brown eyes and there is no need for me to be rude to her when she is only trying to help me.

“It's Glynis, young lady.”

“Oh please, I am no lady, I am Vilda.”

“You are Kee's young lady, but I will be happy to call you Vilda. It is an unusual name, is it common where you come from?” She asks, clearly in a chatting mood so I lean on the doorframe, Drake will just have to wait.

“It is unusual also where we come from but I don't know how I got it. It never occurred to me to ask the people around me about it, for me it was always just who I was,” I reply.

“As it should be, a good name is important. We give our young names with a meaning here in Dragoncourt.” She nods again and this time I smile.

“Really, what a nice tradition. What does Glynis mean?”

“No great meaning to that, it means from the valley, which is where I was born.”

“Clever. What about the others, the King, Kee?” I'm curious now and she leans back, stretches her back and sighs.

“Anghus means exceptionally strong, a good name for a king.
